I was not surprised by this idiot’s lack of actual knowledge for that is typical of conservatives such as himself. For him to make statements such as “People do not choose to have same-sex attractions but they do choose to engage in homosexual behavior” is simply an illustration of the lack of actual intelligence on the conservative end of this debate.
Now I am not going to attempt to debate the repeal of DADT for that is simply to easy. All of the research, both past and present, be it scientific studies or simple history, shows that the conservative argument against a repeal of DADT is simply wrong. There is no logic contained within the conservative argument however there is plenty of hatred towards homosexuals. To illustrate this, let me quote Mr. Sprigg again:
Chris Matthews: “Do you think we should outlaw gay behavior?”
Peter Sprigg: “I think the Supreme Court decision in Lawrence V. Texas which overturned the sodomy laws in this country was wrongly decided. I think there would be a place for criminal sanctions against homosexual behavior.”
This frame of mind that Mr. Sprigg currently embraces is the direct result of religion that has become twisted into a machine of hatred and intolerance. For those of you who fail to understand what I just said let me put it in plain language. The opinion that LGBT men/women cannot serve in our military because of their sexuality is wrong and has been allowed to flourish because of a deep seated hatred within the evangelical community towards LGBT people. These evangelical extremists are the Christian equivalent to the Taliban. While they may not have killed anyone yet (at least directly), they continue to perpetuate their violent beliefs through the legislative process.
It is people like Mr. Sprigg and the Family Research Councils leader in gay bashing, Tony Perkins, who has indirectly attacked every member of the LGBT community through their hate filled messages. In the past, the Family Research Council has claimed that homosexuals are more likely to molest children and to raise LGBT children which is the exact opposite of what every single scientific study has found in the past.
It is people like Peter Sprigg that continue to secretly support the murders of LGBT persons through the legislative process, either domestically or internationally. For those of you who do not understand what I am talking about, simply google Uganda anti-gay law.
This is all so infuriating because all of these men/women claim to be Christians. While I myself am not a Christian, I was raised as a Christian and know enough scripture to realize what these men and women believe is the exact opposite of what Jesus taught in the Gospels. However Christianity itself is also to blame because of the near universal silence on the issues of gay rights.
Over the past hundred years, religion has acted like a cancer on the minds of conservative America, eroding any sense of morality. These tyrants call for the murder or imprisonment of homosexuals while ignoring their own dogma. This is not a simple lack of understanding between gay and straight America. This is a rejection of common morality, found within all religions, and the adherence to dogmatic fairy tales that have little to no relevance to the modern world.
Lastly I would like to end this rant here. There is a strong need for a separation of church and state. The need for this was expressed brilliantly by James Madison.
“Religion and government will both exist in greater purity; the less they are mixed together.”
