Take, for instance, health care reform. Now the health insurance industry can spend all the money it wants trying to undo any kind of reform like allowing insurance companies to deny someone coverage because of pre-existing conditions. Now even though 90 percent of Americans agree with making it illegal to deny someone coverage because of a past condition, this will mean nothing because of the power that is now held by the special interests in America.
What America’s democracy has become is a perverted personification of capitalism. The simple act of voting will not hold any sway. Now corporations have the power. If a Senator decides to sponsor a bill in Congress, then corporations can now spend unlimited amounts of money to defeat it, effectively silencing the voices of the average voter. They will now be able to threaten any Senator, member of Congress, or event the President, to vote for or against any bill, or risk losing campaign money, and as such, they would essentially be buying the American government. This is a sad day in America. For most, however, it will simply be another day in their meaningless lives, and that is the saddest part of all.
