For instance, whether or not you agree with President Obama’s plan to restore America to its former greatness, you must admit that at least he is trying to do something about it. For those who complain about partisanship within Washington, I must ask you to look at the past year with open eyes. Who was it who constantly replied with no? Who was it who constantly voted against all policies that were brought by a Democrat in Congress? The answer is solely, the Republicans and a certain Independent from Connecticut.
It seems that a few Americans are failing to understand the very concept of cooperation. President Obama has offered his hand for aid from Republicans on various occasions and each time his hand was slapped away. To quote him from the Democrats National Convention, “We will lend out our hand, if you will only unclench your fist.” Republicans have a brilliant political strategy here however. All they have to do is say no to everything and then complain about the results of their arrogance.
The thing is that this will only work for so long. For instance, Republicans have grasped upon the results of the special election in Massachusetts that gave Republicans a new seat in the Senate, a seat that the late Sen. Edward Kennedy held for decades. The problem is that Massachusetts is not a Republican state nor is it a safe zone for Democrats.
The core issue for the voters in Massachusetts was the deficit and not President Obama’s “liberal’ agenda. The voters of Massachusetts support the public option since they already have universal health insurance in that state. They also support gay marriage, ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and DOMA. Thus what do Republicans think that they have gained in Massachusetts other than a new Senate seat that will not be held for long? The fighting within the Republican Party will be their undoing. A split in the Republican Party cost them the election in 1912 and if they fail to reconcile their own divisive ideology, it will cost them the election in 2012.
